One of the biggest medical conditions that can be caused by what you eat is acid reflux disease. Acid reflux disease is also known as gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a medical condition where the acid contained in the digested or partially digested food contained in our stomach will flow back up into the esophagus.
While many people can live with this medical condition many find the acid reflux symptoms to be very painful. That is why there are several ways in which doctors can treat it. There are special medications as well as different surgeries and natural treatments that could help to fight it.
So what happens inside of our bodies that causes these painful symptoms? The foods that we eat are digested with the help of acid in our stomach. This acid is made up of very powerful enzymes that work to break the food down and send it on to its next destination.
It is when that enzymes and the acid flow back up to the esophagus that we begin to experience pain and inflammation. Our stomachs are protected from this acid by a special lining. Something that the esophagus does not have.
One of the most common symptoms of GERD is heartburn. Unfortunately many people believe that heartburn is a separate condition in itself - but they are connected. Although some people may have very mild cases of heartburn. Most people will feel the onset of heartburn after each meal or just when they eat certain types of foods.
