Learn What Melanoma Is

Usually our lifestyle will not be able to help and determine whether or not we will have cancer. Except if it is melanoma. Melanoma is one of the few types of cancers that we can actually do our best to avoid. If we applied the proper sunscreen and stayed off the tanning bed we could reduce that risk by a lot.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that will begin in the skin. It’s official name is called melanocytes. People should always be on the lookout for melanoma so that they can catch it early. The way to do this is to know the symptoms and signs to look for.

The first sign of melanoma is a change in the shape, color, size, and feel of an already existing mole. The majority of melanomas have a black and blue area surrounding them or they may have the appearance of a brand new mole. Sometimes they may also be abnormal, black, and very unattractive.

If you feel that you have melanoma in anyway it is important that you contact your doctor immediately. They will able to run the appropriate tests and determine whether or not it is.

During the examination with your doctor they will perform a routine check up as well as examine your skin for any growths. If your family has a history with this cancer than you should make your doctor aware of any new moles that have appeared.

It is possible to treat melanoma if it is diagnosed and properly treated while the tumor is small and thin and has not had the chance to invade the skin. If the doctor is unable to remove the mole during the early stages than the cancer cells will grow in a downward fashion and invade the healthy tissue. Once it is thick and deep the disease will spread to other parts of the body that is very difficult to control and treat.
