Fundoplication is the most common acid reflux surgery. Doctors will usually choose this procedure to treat this severe case of acid reflux because it can increase LES pressure - which can prevent acid from backing up and to repair any present hiatal hernias in the body. Open Nissen and Laparoscopic are the two different types of fundoplication surgeries.
Both of these procedures have long term benefits for patients. There are certain studies that state that over 90% of the patients who use go through with these surgeries are completely free of any heartburn even after 5 years.
The procedures are able to relieve the coughs and other respiratory problems related to severe acid reflux disease in 85% of patients. Half of patients say that it helps their stomachs to empty and to improve peristalsis.
Yet, as with most medical procedures there are negatives to it. There are postoperative problems and limitations from acid reflux surgeries. A study in 2003 showed that 18% of surgical patients still needed medications to fight against the symptoms of GERD. 38% of surgical patients experienced brand new symptoms including; bloating, gas, and difficulty swallowing.
It is important for patients to understand that the goal of fundoplication acid reflux surgery is not meant to cure fundolplication. It is important for you to speak to your doctor when considering this surgery to help fight against the painful symptoms and flare ups of GERD disease.
The most common candidates of this surgery include those who suffer from esophagi is - which is an inflamed esophagus, strictures, finding it hard to gain and maintain weight, and symptoms of GERD even after using anti-reflux drugs.
